"Maurizio" wrote: Hi,
Do files added to child tabbles automatically inherit all of the parent tabbles?
Yes, they do .
If I create tabbles according to my colour groups and put all the tabbles of those groups in there, does that mean that in the classic workspace the tabbles all disappear and end up in single tabbles with the name of my colour groups?
Yes.
That would make the classic workspace less attractive as I would have to drill down into tabbles to find things I might not be thinking of when opening the app, you know?
Less attractive, yes. But not entirely useless. It’s like the windows desktop. You can see folders on the Windows desktop, but you don’t see subfolders. You have to open a folder to see its subfolders. But that does not make the desktop useless.
Also, you can put a tabble into another tabble, and at the same time on the workspace. So you don’t have to drill down, but you can see it in two places. (hold ctrl and drag to copy a tabble)
…and this is precisely why I don’t use the nested tabbles – In addition to making the classic workspace rather useless in intuitive drilling into my info (following an idea thread) it also requires adding upwards of 5 (or more!) very useless tags to all my files. And yes, Maurizio, for me, and it sounds like how mkayi is using it, using the nesting function -does- make the workspace useless to our way of use and the negates the reason for using tabbles in the first place.
This was pretty much my exact argument when you implimented this version of nesting and why I’ve asked for a switch or some other way to allow the user to chose whether the parent-tabble is inherited, at minimum. In the workspace, have the tabbles break out by parent tabble, much like it does by color group or alpha.

Interesting ideas, this. Some sort of re-linking would most definately be extremely useful! (Did I mention that it would be like really, really, useful? 😉 )
If files are moved when Tabbles is not running the file ‘loses’ it tags (and a ‘shadow file’ is no longer shown where you can re-find the file by browsing to update the filepath of the file) so, in essence, you have no choice -except- to manually re-tag the file from scratch. (The Database Update Wizard is -no- help here and looks like it would actually really munge things up)
This is a bit of a problem for me if/when I rearrange files at work (create new sub-dirs for a person/topic, etc) or if Tabbles isn’t running here at home (rare, but has happened! 🙂 ). All the moved files lose their tabbles! Sure I can re-tag in a limited fashion with the rules (no general run rules button yet tho… 😉 ) but for the files that had detailed tags I must do it all again.
@Rinat; I guess I can see a few reasons for having the same files in different paths on different computers, but it seems to me to be rather rare instances: active versus archived files, work-defined structure versus personal home structure, and of course, the standard Windows filepath naming conventions. (c:usersmrdnadesktop versus c:usersmycatdesktop)
You may be able to use the Database Update Wizard (menu>tools>advanced>DUW)in this case to adjust db paths if you are setting up a second individual db for it.
Elsewise, and I haven’t tested this to see if it would actually work, perhaps putting the db on a USB drive and tagging each set of files into it. Yes, you’d have to do the tagging twice and add a second set of rules, however I think that Tabbles would ignore (and not show) any non-present files. This would, of course, make the tabbles export/import feature unusable to you as it imports into filepaths defined by the export.
Do play with the nested tabbles feature; it will give you a way to create an OR work-around (put your OR tabbles into a 3rd tabble. thx for that tip, Andrea!) among other fun little functions. Still a few oddities in the tree feature, but it -is- brand new and any bugs are being hunted down as we type…
Anyways, welcome aboard, Rinat! Always nice to have a new voice on the boards!

mrdnain reply to: Tabbles with index #1801This looks kind of like it could be handled with a logical OR for the most part? The idea of being able to run mathematical operations on tabbles is definitely intriguing but I wonder if it might either balloon the size of the DB or slow down the program if not narrowly implemented – possibly via a separate search panel?
I have asked for auto-tagging based on file date and time (though it hasn’t made it into release yet…) would that help you in any way?

Seems the vote-getters seem to be the USB-keyed systems and I can understand why. Does sound like it’s more about slowing down or isolating the crack so it’s not worth the time.
What’s Maurizio think about this? From the thread it seems the regular options all have their strengths and weaknesses. Will have to read more before I’m qualified to comment on one or another… 🙂
in reply to: Development thoughts – The DNA ToDo list #1723Maurizio; I haven’t used google wave yet. Will take a look at it and I’m certainly interested in your thoughts!
Andrea; Thanks much, was a busy holiday and always stressful for me. Some year I’ll figure it out and relax… 🙂

MENUS, POPUPS, AND RIGHT-CLICKS
Systray flyout menu should collapse when it loses focus (currently if you right-click open the sytray menu you must select an option or it?s persistant.
Not sure this is feasable…it seems like a standard windows control… I’ll talk to Maurizio about this.
Actually this is standard windows behavior. Right click on any icon in your systray that evokes a flyout menu then left click anywhere else except on the menu and you’ll see the flyout menu go away. Basically, when the flyout menu loses focus it goes away – except for the Tabbles flyout menu.

Add internet address to Tabbles via right-click/kybd shortcut
Did you notice that you can drag’n’drop from the address bar of IE/Firefox/Chrome into a tabbles? There is a little thing that you can drag’n’drop next to the address bar, you can use it to drag’n’drop the url to the desktop or to a folder too…
Anyway, we’re thinking of asking someone (we have an idea already to whom) to make a plugin for Firefox so that the Quick-tag window can be invoked from Firefox… would this be good enough?Do know about the drag and drop, but most url collection occurs on a machine that doesn’t have Tabbles installed. I drag and drop to thumb drive folders than synch it onto the main machine when I get home.
That sounds like what I was talking about, yep. To check that we’re thinking of the same thing; highlight the URL in the address bar, right click on it, the menu has an entry to "add to Tabbles" which invokes an add tag panel without having to switch focus to Tabbles. Good enhancements would be detecting the web page’s title and then running auto-tagging rules on it. Perhaps even treating it like a new file where it’s auto-tagged and a pop-up allows you to add more, etc, rather than opening an alt-a at all!
An alternate or additional) idea would be saving the URL as a shortcut file, like what is created when dragging the address into a tabbled folder. The shortcut file automatically takes the web page’s title as the file name which then triggers auto-tag rules. The downside (?) might be that you would have to either prompt for the save dir, or (better) define a default dir in the options menu.

Import/export structures/dbs needs a complete make-over.
Yes, we agree on that 100%. As I mention in some other thread, we’ll soon be working on the shared-tabbles feature: such feature will need a re-coding of the whole import-export of dbs, and therefore I guess we’ll catch the ball and do also the thing you mention here. Anyway, it would be great having some input from you on how to improve this set of functions.
Excellent! If you guys have a skeleton of an idea already on this do open a thread! I’ll try to get my ideas on it together and coherent and get em posted soon.

PROGRAM DETAILING
Program title bar notes DB/str loaded
Force/filter file extension when loading db/str. No reason the user should be presented with every file in the folder when they?re looking for a db. Also consider shortening the db extension to a standard 3 letters. (IE; *.tdb, *.tbl, or the like. Quick google showed me a good extension can be found without conflicting with currently popular program extensions.)
ok…I’m writing a note on this. This is a kind of thing that we tend to de-prioritize as only super-advanced users can use it. Also, we’ve been discussing several times about the possibility to make Tabbles portable/mobile, meaning to give the chance to the user to run it directly from a USB drive, with the db and all the paths saved relatively (they would work no matter what letter the drive is using). I guess this would also limit the need to change/move databases, isn’t it?
LOL! I think I didn’t explain well enough. Sorry, Andrea, my fault.
The first one is about having the filename of the currently loaded database displayed in Tabble’s title bar. At the top left corner of most program windows is the program name and either the file loaded or some description of ‘where’ you are. Currently firefox top left reads; Tabbles forum – post a reply – Mozilla Firefox 3.6 beta 5.
By ‘force/filter the file extension’ I meant filtering out seeing the files that you can’t load. Since you can’t load a txt file into Tabbles then why display it in the restore/load window? In a dir with alot of files you end up seeing alot of files you can’t load anyways so why not filter out the files you can’t load and only display the files you can.
When backing up/saving a database Tabbles defaults to ‘db.tabblesdb’. Two things here; First, shorten the default file extension to 3 letters (IE db.tdb), and second, make the default filename the filename of the currently loaded database.
As to making Tabbles thumb drive portable? 😯 You know I been wanting that forever! 😆

Start adding ?are you sure?? dialogues when loading and saving (with filenames) and other applicable locations. While an UNDO button would be nice, the idea is to stop a mistake before it occurs rather than fixing it afterwards. This philosophy should be applied program wide.
Are you referring to loading/saving databases?
Primarily, but it can be applied other places as well, such as when one is about to clear all tabbles on multiple files… 😉

Actually there’s 5 things there, none terribly important, but not zoom… 🙂

Merge link/unlink panels, (add rename active only if single file selected) ? Yes, this has been something I?ve harped on for a while now. This is major.
Uh, I remember that Maurizio tried to do it recently (I was also involved with the GUI and the testing but it didn’t quite come any conclusion…honestly I can’t remember why but there was some underlying problem….
Yes, he posted me about having a problem. In any event though I want to keep this on Maurizio’s mind because I think it’s important to solve. Having to use 2 windows to manipulate the tabbles on a file is rather a pain when you have files flowing through a system.
"Andrea" wrote:
You’re talking about hide/unhide tabbles? If so, I have some good news: hide/unhide functions have already been removed since now you can put a tabble into another one…hiding it somehow. We have to work on some clever visualization modes that will allow you to see the tabble hierarchy as well as all the tabbles with some sort of filtering possible. (an alpha/preview of this should be available tomorrow or something)Ouch… Uh, I’m not sure I’ll be using much of the nesting tabbles as it would add upwards of 3 or 4 useless tabbles to every file. And if you’ve taken out the hide/unhide? I assume all tabbles become visible? Oh my… 😯
"Andrea" wrote:
The purpose and attractiveness of Tabbles should remain with its unique function. Form can be refined at leisure. Also, hiding tabbles should not be a ?hidden requirement? to the program?s usability.
The question ?What problem does it solve?? should be taken out back and shot. The problem with relying on this question as a standard for program development input restricts potentials. This was well illustrated when we began calling for a standardized menu bar. The only way we could get it in there was to hammer on the ?learning curve? problem and it took a while for even that to be accepted. Further windows standardization has been stalled by application of this question. The logical OR request is where I?ve really come to dislike this question. Quite honestly I?ve come to see this question as a way to minimize input that is not completely enough presented or that may be hard to code. This doesn?t mean you should coddle and run with every scrap of an idea anyone blathers out, but a much better question would be ?How would this improve Tabbles??
The pcworld guy was kind enough to write us offering feedback 🙂
I wrote him back suggesting that he updates his video-drivers or tests Tabbles on another pc… we are 99,9% sure that that guy has a video-driver issue… the problems he describes can all be explained by the fact the WPF is drawing the Tabbles graphics using a software renderer instead of the the video-board.Besides: at the same we got this review and based on comments from other people, we’ve been thinking about making the interface look&feel more "standard" where standard = like Office 2007 or Outlook. It’s indeed not a lot of work and we could always give the user the chance to switch to the current "greyish/Mac-ish" skin.
It did sound like he was experiencing out-of-the-ordinary slowness and I don’t doubt you’re right, however I have mentioned that I’ve experienced slowing on occasions and high mem use as well and bad drivers aren’t the problem.
I think closer to my point is the fact that the number of tabbles showing can affect Tabble’s performance dramatically. Form over Function. I was actually rather surprised when Maurizio noted that a couple hundred tabbles visible was alot and it turned out to be the cause of the hangs and crashes I was having. Nesting tabbles may somewhat mitigate the number of tabbles visible at any one time but it doesn’t solve the underlying problem. (which I think will crop up again anyways, but we’ll see…)
I assume that by ‘look & feel’ you also mean ‘menu commands & layouts’ too? 😉
Anyways, hope that clarifies a bit, and I hope for an even more successful year for Tabbles in 2k10!
Ho Ho Ho!
in reply to: How to keep View Mode and Zoom? #1637You may want to post your feature request in this thread… 😆
in reply to: After new restart of the program, it loses a code. #1605Some of the malware memory resident programs will lock out registry edits as well. Spybot does that by default, unsure if MSE can be set that way. Possible that a program isn’t giving you an info pop-up when it blocks the write? Agree with Andrea that it’s probably something not allowing a registry write.
(I would wonder though, is there a possibility that Tabbles may be not able to ‘see’ the reg entry for some reason?)
in reply to: Translation issues #1590"Maurizio" wrote: "Check-out" means "export". You’re right it’s a poor choice of words; apologies.
The purpose of the function is to let you create a zip file containing files and their tags, which can then be imported by someone else keeping the tags.
___
About a spanish translation: to my knowledge. I’m sure Andrea will be able to tell you more about this.
I was looking at that last week and as we ‘lost’ the collaboration feature a few releases ago I can’t see any way to import the zipfile. Am I missing it somewhere?
in reply to: COMBINATION function 2 #1572"Andrea" wrote: Maurizio just write on his to-do a function that sounds like "find related/similar files". The results are indeed very similar to a logical OR but you start from a file instead that from 2+ tabbles…
(yes, we are listening 🙂 )Ummm, I’m not sure I understand how, or at least how it can narrow as well as a logical OR. For example; I want to find a file the could have been from May or June. The OR allows to filter out all that aren’t May or June, a similar/related would not achieve that precision by any means.
That said, a related/similar feature does sound pretty handy in other instances, just not as an OR replacement.
in reply to: COMBINATION function 2 #1568LOL! My Italian is a bit… how shall I say…. nonexistant. Will pass on the google wave but appreciate the offer. 🙂
Apologies for being a bit grumpy this morning, but this is another of those things I don’t want to fall through the cracks along the way. (basically it completes the Great Boolean Trinity. 😎 )
Not to worry, you guys got alot on your plates right now, just glad to see this hit your radar.
cheers,
mrdnaBob,
Just a quick response (cuz I’m at work…)
Glad you like the wiki! Andrea has some big plans for it, but with both he and Maurizio -very- busy at the moment it may be a bit before he digs in to it much. In the meantime I’m starting to figure out the wiki editor commands (slowly, via keeping the quick ref updated) and may start expanding it as I think appropriate. Ideas and help are certainly welcome!
I also see Tabbles as an eventual desktop replacement, but there’s a few things on the todo list before it’ll start being a real contender. At the moment though, Tabbles does DM and idea-generation for me awfully well. 🙂
About organizing your prgs by function; with some creative tabbling something near to it may be possible. I’d be interested in hearing more about your idea and exactly what you’re wanting it to do.
As to having to build Tabbles on 2 machines with the same files – No, you should be able to backup the db and load it (restore) on the other machine. You may have to do some re-defining of the file paths (tools>advanced>wizard iirc) if your directory tree isn’t identical. Believe that would be about the only thing to worry about. (When we get the full collaboration tools back I imagine transfers like this would be easier.)

mrdnain reply to: COMBINATION function 2 #1565"Andrea" wrote: I also do agree on this 🙂
Guys, it’s really about what has to be done first… things like that would require possibly weeks of work between logic, GUI, testing etc…No doubt about that, Andrea, however the original request was back in august, and my bump was october. The last word we heard from you guys (in august) was that it was initially scrapped and you might reconsider it if you got more requests.
Consider this "more requests"…
(no, I don’t expect this to be in the next release or anything, but other than the road map on the site, we really have no idea what is on the todo list from one release to the next and have nary a clue whether this was on it or not…)
