    Hello John,

I don’t think I get what you need here… could you please add an example on how you link or unlink files normally? (I’m asking cause both linking and unlinking can be done in different ways)

    best regards,

    Andrea

hi John, and welcome to the forum! 🙂

you can already sort the files in different ways, you can access it by clicking on the triangle on the file panel:

did you find this out already? Are you sure that a random sorting is what you need?

    best regards,

    Andrea

    Hello inf2know,

thanks a lot for your feedback.

We totally understand your point of view about the graphics: we’re aware that Tabbles looks at least different (if not strange) and of course this will cause some people to love it and some other people to hate it. Consider that what we’re trying to achieve with the interface is not easy by itself (we’re trying to show files linked to many "concepts") and that we redid the whole interface maybe ten times before getting to what you see today.

So, even if we’re proud of what we did, we’re aware that some people might not like the interface while still being interested in the concept. Right now our goal now is to earn back the group of people who are interested in the idea but are scared away by the graphics. In order to do this we’re planning to:

    1) in the short term: integrate some of the Tabbles functionalities in windows Explorer. We’ll probably be able to integrate only very few functionalities, as most of the things we do in Tabbles simply wouldn’t fit the Explorer interface. Your opinion about what and how we should do here, would be highly appreciated!

    2) in the medium term: develop one or more alternative themes for Tabbles, which would make it look sensibly different by modifying the existing graphics (while keeping the code mostly as it is right now). Suggestions here will be welcome too!

Again, thanks for your feedback, we hope to see more coming 🙂

    My best regards,

    Andrea

    Hi Again,

I think the best way to implement it would be to have a view that shows the different versions. That way you only seem them when you are looking for them.

What you mean with a "a view that shows the different versions"? Do you want to see all the versions at once in the same panel?

we’re thinking of having a special tabble named "version" where inside the tabble you see the version number. The user will manually go one version up, and when this happens Tabbles will make a backup copy of the file.
Then we need a little dialog where the user can choose which version of the file he wants to open.

Does it look good enough for you?

I am talking about actually storing the data in the DB. That way your word file, etc is stored as an object in the database. Then tabbles becomes the true system for storing all objects in the database. When you back up data then you would have one central file to back up. It also means it is harder to lose the files since they are in one place. Right now you can break a link by just moving the file in tabbles.

as we are writing, we are working out a solution to prevent the problem that when you move files (using windows explorer) Tabbles can’t find them anymore. In order to do this we’re implementing a windows service (a demon) that will keep track of all the files that are moved on the hard drive.

As for saving all the files into the db, it would be a huge job, have a lot of downsides and we don’t really see the need of it. What would happen when an application needs to save a file?
I think it’s much easier to hook-up with the windows file system, right now Tabbles doesn’t really do it.

Best regards and thanks for your input! 🙂

Hello Wintermute and welcome to the forum 🙂

    – We actually heard many requests of a version control system, but people seem to have pretty different ideas about how it should work… what is it that you have in mind? What kind of workflow?

    – as for saving the db: the db is automatically saved every 5 minutes and when you close Tabbles. Tabbles keeps a backup of the database, plus you there is a built-in feature to backup and restore the db. Do you really think you need more than that?

    My best regards,

    Andrea

    Hey Punker,

thanks for the hint, we’ll implement this shortly… it should be included in the next release which is coming out tomorrow and will probably be the one we’ll start selling.

    Hello there,

    very good point:

We’re currently implementing the NOT operator, it will be available within a month or so. We have also been considering the OR operator and we initially scrapped it. We might reconsider it and implement it if we see requests for it.

    Thanks for your feedback!

I’m glad to hear it worked. We are using many new and non-mainstream concepts for the User Interface: not sure if it looks like it but the user interface is the thing we’re spending most of the time on. Also consider that we’re using a new a pretty unexplored technology (Microsoft WPF) wich for the the first enables a developer to design an interface with animations, zoom and panning.
So, don’t get too shocked in finding out you’re very dependent on typical UI-elements as a scrollbar, so is anyone else and we’re aware of that.

Looking forward to help you with your list categories.

    Hi again,

both the tabbles and the category fonts can also be customized: you can’t modify them in the software, you have to manually edit an xml file containing the structure of the default database…you don’t wanna do that right now, let me have a list of the categories/colors that you need, and I’ll make the with a larger font.

In the meanwhile, I’d suggest you to check this out: from the main toolbar, click on Tabbles view > Spatial, this mode will allow you to freely move tabbles on the screen. I’d suggest you try this and then you try grouping the tabbles in a way where the tabbles you need more often are in the upper left of the screen: this way you’ll be able to keep them zoomed to a level that looks close to Arial 30 to me, while having at least 12-16 of them confortably on screen. Looking forward to hearing if that word for you.

P.S.: I’m a big fan of Marcus Orlovsky, the founder of http://www.bryanstonsquare.co.uk , do you know him or the company?

    My best regards,

    Very interesting feedback!

About text size: did you discover the zoom and the panning functions?
    – You can zoom in and out by rolling the mouse wheel, or using the vertical bar standing on the left side of the window.
    – You can pan holding the right mouse button and dragging your mouse, or using the four arrows in the top left of the window. The round button between the arrows will bring the view back to a sensible default

Changing the text size is also possible, but we encourage you to try using the zoom/panning functions. The main problem is that since you may have many tabbles visible at any time, finding a text size that fits any situation is hardly possible.

About the colours: please send me a list of categories/colours that you need, and I’ll make sure they look very bright 🙂

Sure: an extensive set of good quality training videos is sitting on our todo list among the top 3 tasks 🙂

And audio is something other people asked as well. The first training videos will happen sometime this month.

in reply to: Default tabbles #764

From day one, Tabbles has been developed with customisation in mind. Not only it is possible for us to easily modify the default Categories/colours/tabbles present in the default databases, but users can easily do it as well and then send their own customized (empty) databases to each other. I’ll post a tutorial about this later on today.

Until then I’d ask you to send me a list with the categories/colors you need, and I’ll send you a database configured as you need it shortly after: it takes 10 mins for me to do, and 10 secs for you to import it and use it. Looking forward to the list!

    Hi Jan,

thanks a lot for checking out Tabbles, and welcome to our forum! 🙂

We currently have some drag’n’drop functions in Tabbles: you can drag’n’drop files and folders into the tabbles (the tabbles are the "bubbles", in case this is not clear).

What else would you like to have?

P.S.: you’ll get a free license of Tabbles 1.0 as soon as we implement the DRM/serial number 🙂
P.P.S: did you realize what the function "combine" does?

    My best Regards,

    Andrea
