Yes you’re right: we made a lot of truly unconventional choices for the GUI and now we’re thinking of "hiding" some elements of the interface and leave them to "power users".

There is already a FAQ on the website… do you think we should have it in the software as well? (We can place a link to it in the program…)

As for the localization: I won’t make it to upload today the stuff you need… it’s gonna be the first thing I do tomorrow.

P.S.: our project manager will get back to you about the other feature requests you did.

    Best regards,

    Andrea

Let me gather all the needed stuff and write some instructions… I’ll post a zip here in the Forum sometime tomorrow.

Best regards and thanks a lot! ๐Ÿ™‚

Hello Nefycee, and welcome to the forum! ๐Ÿ™‚

We speak many languages but Tabbles doesn’t speak that many yet…but of course we’re planning on localizing it other languages, and Deutsch is on top of our todo list.
By the way, do you think you could help us with the translation? ๐Ÿ™‚ In order to translate all you need is a simple tool or Excel and we could do a first pass of software-translation (using google translate or something) meaning that all that the translator would have to do would just be checking if the translation makes sense and fixing it where needed…
If you’re up for the challenge, we’ll be happy to give you a shiny-blinking-flaming license for Tabbles Business (which will soon include Archiving/Backup and versioning!) as well as an autograph from all of us! (woo-hoo!) and a glass of Weizenbier whenever the occasion comes ๐Ÿ˜€

this offer goes to everyone in the forum!

    Please let us know!

    Best regards,

    Andrea

    Hallo Jonas,

welcome to the forum and thanks for your very valuable input!
as I mentioned per email we’ll be happy to find a solution to this. We’ll soon issue a free patch with all the fixes to the bugs that came out from this GOTS session.
Stay tuned on the forum and on tabbles.net! ๐Ÿ™‚

    Best,

    Dear Bob,

thanks a LOT for your post: sharing your experiences from the dark ages of IT (… ๐Ÿ˜€ …) means a lot to us as we realize that there is still so much we can do with Tabbles and probably most of the useful stuss is just 5 lines of code away!

    Particularly interesting about our post:

    1)
Personally I would love to be able to create files names like:
c:programfilesmyprog.YYMMDD_HHMMSS.exe and have the OS "manage" them
The naming convention I currently use is to "add" either a datestamp or version number to most files.

in the very beginning of Tabbles we considered the options of tagging files by renaming them and then search the files based on the name. This would have resulted in having file names like: invoices_gas_2009.pdf or HolidayInGreece_Mark_Deborah_Beach_Island_2008.jpg. We discarded the ida quickly as it would have created more problems than solutions. On top of it we believe that naming files is deviation from real life: you don’t name each of the dishes and chairs you own, but you can still distinguish them one another and find them when you need them… this is the goal the we set when we began working on Tabbles: surpass the file and folder names and replace them with visual tags.

    2)

It is my personal "solution" to version control and works well, but is way to manual
At least the time stamps contain the create modify and last use date, but I would LOVE to add a use count!

Improving the way we sort files (by last open/modified/created) would not be too complicated for us. Given that we are in reality building a sort virtual file system, even adding some other options would be possible.
And versioning is something we are already thinking about: as long as versioning would be "manual" (the user tells the software to go up one version for that file), it would be technically easy to implement. The reason why we didn’t do it yet is that we feel that we lack a good inspiration on GUI for the versioning…any suggestions here would be very welcome! ๐Ÿ™‚

Bob, please keep the comments coming! You might also consider replacing the word "old" with "experienced" ๐Ÿ™‚

    Best regards,

    Andrea

    Hehe, I hope you’re not! ๐Ÿ™‚

The installer uninstalls everything apart from the db (which is in c:documents and settingsuserdocumenttabbles) and a couple of keys in the registry… it should work as any other uninstaller around.

    Cheers,

    Andrea

    Dear Andrew,

in the next version coming (probably today) we are including a link to uninstall Tabbles

So, thanks a lot, but you don’t need to worry about it now ๐Ÿ™‚

    Great idea! ๐Ÿ˜€

    I’ll start with this:

Thanks John, this sounds like a very good hint. We did indeed discuss about the possibility to add some text, somehow into Tabbles.

I’m having a look at the programs you mentioned: it’s interesting for us finding out what other softwares do our users like/need, as so far it’s not been easy to find a real competitor for Tabbles.

naaa, don’t worry about rules, we don’t have any at the moment ๐Ÿ™‚
(as long as people are not spamming, which is becoming an issue! I’ve been banning one spammer a day for the past week, and it’s getting quite annoying! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ )

    Dear Andrew,

Right now we’re testing a feature that we nicknamed "Minus", I guess you already understood what it is for ๐Ÿ˜€

I’m talking about a logical operator performing a logical NOT in addition to the one that is already built-in, the logical AND a.k.a "Combine".

    Andrew,

we’re aware of the .net 4 but we didn’t do any test yet. We’re confident that most (if not all) the code written so far will run smoothly on .net 4. We hope to see some speed-ups when moving to .net 4… we’ll see ๐Ÿ™‚

    Andrew,

you’re not violating any rule, indeed we’re very happy to share and discuss the technical details of Tabbles ๐Ÿ™‚
Any other question is more than welcome!

We’ve actually registered a blog on google blog, but we didn’t have the time to write anything about it yet.

hehe, I was waiting for someone to come up with this question ๐Ÿ˜€

Some of the story is in the press release we issued (you find it here: https://www.tabbles.net/en/about/press-room.html)

Shortly: at some point of my life (i was working as S&M at 3shape.com at the time) I realized that a hierarchical system was not good enough to keep my own files organized in a sensible way. At that point I started looking for a small application that would allow me to place the same file into several folders, but without duplicating it. So I started researching the internet extensively, made myself a culture about document management systems, and after a couple of months I still couldn’t find such an application. Well, that’s where it all started ๐Ÿ™‚

If you want to know more details, just PM me, I don’t want to bore people to death on this topic, ok? ๐Ÿ™‚

    best regards,

    Andrea

Another VERY good point, with a good hint.

We’re about to release a "business" version of Tabbles and a "student" one. For the first one (and maybe the second as well) we’re aiming to have a document versioning system( which we hope to develop sometime in Q4 2009).

Anyway we initially discarded the possibility of a sub-versioning: we thought that getting into files and comparing them would be a mess. Now, we’re not too keen in interfacing Tabbles with an external app at this time (as we prefer to develop the thing ourselves and hold all the rights to sell it), but we’ll definitely have a look at Tortoise.

One thing: Tabbles is born as a tool for the average office-job guy. We ended up with a database interfacing and visualization tool. We already had a couple of suggestions about "plugins for this or that software"… we may definitely look into that at some point! ๐Ÿ™‚

    Thanks for the good hint!

    Andrea
