    Hi John,

nope, we’ll release an updated version in a couple of weeks. One reason is that the GUI is undergoing quite some changing now, so we’d better wait a bit til we release an update manual.

Do you have issues with something in particular? I’ll do our best to guide you here on our forum. πŸ™‚

    best regards,

    Andrea

    Hello hello!

    we’re not sleeping, don’t worry πŸ™‚
The latest modifications for the German language have been pasted into the appropriate files… but which are the appropriate files?

    Introducing a .resx

The appropriate files are the .resx files…and WTF is a .resx?

    – A .resx is a Visual Studio resource file that contains information for the localization.
    – You can manage a .resx using several different tools, my favourite is, a free open-source tool that you can download from here: Zeta resource editor

How to use Zeta Resource editor:
    1) Create a project and name it "My dog loves my cat, non-platonically", or maybe just "Tabbles"
    2) Right click on the project file and add the .resx files to it
    3) The empty strings are in yellow, use the sort and the search functions to find your strings

The latest .resx (from today) are attached!

    —-
    FAQ:

    * I would like to help by translating a new language: how do I add a new language to the .resx?
-> post something here or PM me: we’ll provide you with all you need (a drafted translation done with google.com/translate)

    * Ok, and what do I get if I translate your silly software into my fancy language (i.e. Crimean Gothic)
-> you get the fanciest thing you can get from us, which is a license for Tabbles Business. Optionally you can also request a signed picture from the whole Tabbles’ team dressed up as the Village People guys.

    * Where is the old and sweet .xls file gone and why do I need to install this crazy software from Zeta Reticuli?
-> The .xls was meant as a middle-format in order to have the translation drafted by Google Translate… and this is still feasable, just post here or PM if you want to translate the software in your favourite language. If you just want to fix the current language, please install Zeta resource editor.

    That’s all folks!

    John,

did you try the 1.1.7? We believe that categories are back and better than before.
Is the current solution acceptable for you? If not, how can we improve it?

    thanks for letting us know,

    Nefycee: you’re the best! πŸ™‚

    OUTDATED

Maybe you don't know it but you can scale the size of the Tabbles background, you access it by Misc > Resize wallpaper.
You can also try to draw your own background with circled/grouped areas and use it for your freehand configuration… in a sort of mind-mapping style. Makes sense? ;)

    Hello there,

we’ve been talking about this for a while already… we know that there is an issue there. We are now prioritizing new features (like the auto-tagging rules based on folder/filename/extension and) and then some on the same tune… we need to think of a smart solution, and has to be "one size fits all" to solve this.

I know this is not what you want to hear, but you could try and arrange them manually in order to separate the ones you use more often by the others… one think you could try is to draw a desktop background with some circled areas (with names on top) and you could manually arrange your tabbles into those, in a mind-mapping-like style.
Maybe you don’t know it but you can scale the size of the background, you access it by Misc > Resize wallpaper. I hope this helps… please don’t hate me if it doesn’t 😐

    Thanks guys,

I see your points but I have a hard time seeing how we can fit our current functions into a more traditional menu?
Now functions are grouped by similarities, and we tried to make it as minimalistic as possible.

We need to give it reflect about this carefully, and then do a couple of tests

but thanks again for the input, very precious indeed!!! πŸ˜€

    yo,

"Jfw" wrote: Well the auto-tagging feature might help… but I am still convinced that keeping track of copies might be usefull (maybe as an option ?)

    We’ll think of it

    "Jfw" wrote:
    For the last one:
I see tables auto-detects the drives (for ex c: and d:). Clicking on the drives allows me to browse the content.
I tag a file "a.xls" on the C: drive as "Invoice" and if I tag a file "b.xls" on the drive as "Invoice" as well.

If I want to retrive this file I can use tables and look for the "invoice" tag. I will then have "c:a.xls" and "d:b.xls"
To have only the a.xls file I tried to combine "Invoice" and the "c:-drive" tag. I then surprisingly got "no files fiound" message…

Sure, now I get you: this is indeed a limitation, thanks for pointing this out.
The reason is that the "Tabble disc" is technically a "Tabble folder" – it’s nothing else then a link to the real folder and it doesn’t know what is inside its subfolders.
So basically, if you have some files tagged in the root of C: they will show when you combine C: with their tabbles.

What we’re gonna do about this is to disallow the user to combine the tabble drive with a normal tabble.

Anyway this problem will be solved as soon as we’re gonna have the tagging rules (the feature I describe in the blog, a beta should be out this week). Then you’ll be able to set a rule like "all the files inside C: and its subfolders have to go into the tabble named ‘mys stuff in C’". Of course you can also create several rules that will automatically tag (and listen) to some selected folders: this way you won’t have the whole Windows installation tagged.

    Makes sens? πŸ™‚

Jfw, it looks really we’re really tuned: this feature is the next big thing we’re gonna develop. You’re input makes A LOT OF SENSE – anything else you have in mind, please don’t hesitate! πŸ™‚

    "Jfw" wrote: Hello,

Here is my vision of Multi-User support… this vision is typically in business environment where a lot of persons put a lot of information on network drive but nobody knows what info is where πŸ™‚

You could install tables on the PC.
The database is located in a central place (server)
All tables programs points to that database
When placing something on the server you are supposed to tag it correctly.

This will allow everybody to find back the info based on the tags…but….this brings a few issues as well:
-the filelocation must be more robust (as the share does not necessary have the same network-drive name)
-there might be issues on security:
–I can imagine that all info should not be available for everybody)
–I can imagine that the management of table should be centralized to avoid everybody adding tables
–I can imagine that it might be necessary to have a read only access (just to find documents back but not to add files in tables)

Again, we’ll make a better announcement soon but anyway: everything you write is in our plan, except for one thing: the network version of Tabbles (this is how we call it) won’t have a client-server architecture but a P2P one. We’ve been thinking of a network version since day 0, and until 3 weeks ago we were thinking of developing a client-serve app, and to start developing it next year. But then Maurizio thought "who said it has to be client-server?" and a friend of mine also suggested using a P2P architecture.
Making Tabbles P2P will not only take 1/3 of the development/testing/debugging time, but it will be much easier to deploy and to maintain (therefore to sell) as it won’t require any server.

To make it more clear: the files will still be on a shared drive (i.e.: fileserverpublicdocs) and you will be able to see your (shared) colleagues’ tabbles in your Tabbles’ window, and browse them and combine them as your own tabbles today.

I know it sounds like sci-fi, but it’s not that complicated to implement. Plus, but our file system watcher (the piece of software that understands when a file is being moved) will help a lot as well. We should really start seriously blogging about technology, as everyday more we realize we are working something pretty advanced.

Any more thought you’ll have about this, you’re very welcome to share them with us.

P.S.: did you vote on my thread about the Freemium version? πŸ™‚

    hello there,

Adding Tabbles to files, you can choose existing tabbles only from a list in alphabetical order, not by categories / color names. This is confusing. When I am adding tabbles to a picture, I don’t need my music or documents tabbles.

yes, this is also already planned… the whole window will soon be redesign in order to allow the user to sort his tabbles in different ways.

Btw: are you happy with this "Categories 2: the revenge"?

    Thanks,

    Andrea

    hello Matt!

    * Configurable grid size (like tight, medium, loose?)

it’s so cool that I spoke to Maurizio a few hours ago… looks like we’re heading the right way πŸ™‚
This will happen in the software, but not too soon. It needs quite some work and I guess you can live without it…

    * Better yet, select multiple tabbles (with box) and then select an arrangement style and grid spacing, leaving the unselected others as they are. This would allow one to arrange some tabbles in tightly-knit groups, and other in loose or free form layout.

    * right-click choice or better yet, double-click in void performs alt-z (sometimes the auto arrange blasts tabbles out of view! )

the right-click in the void is also planned, the double click -> alt-z sounds very smart!

    * As mentioned by others, a more traditional menu bar

Ok, but how? What bothers you exactly, the graphic layout or the buttons names? Which buttons would you have?

    * right-click in void – choice for to create new tabble

    already planned

    * right-click on tabble – choice to copy (gives you same color, allows name change. Does not copy links to files(or maybe it does, as an option))

uh, good call here as well! πŸ™‚

By the way, we’re thinking of publishing our development plan… I wrote a while ago that we’re sorting the requests and indeed we are πŸ™‚

    Thanks again for the contribution!

P.S.: are your colleagues still chuckling at Tabbles?

    hello there,

"Jfw" wrote: I am still looking at tables and it seems (unless I have missed something), it does not keep track when you copy a file around.
    Let me explain:
When I move a file around Tabbles notices it and points to the new file.
When I copy a file around I expect Tables to take this new files in the same categories as the original one.
This means that if I select the categories I will have to files at two different locations (the original one and the one I have copied…)

well, this is more a design choice rather than a bug… technically for us it wouldn’t be hard to track each file that has been copied, but we chose not to. Before we go on with this subject, please have a look at this post: http://tabbles-dev.blogspot.com/2009/09/new-shaggadelic-feature-in-oven-auto.html.
I guess that this feature (which should be ready in a couple of days will do the trick for you.

I also find it strange that I can not combine a category with the "drives-tables" I have in tables….
This would allow me to further define which file I really want (the categories but on drive C or on my usb stick)

I think that the feature above can help you here as well… but could you please elaborate and give me an example of this?

    thanks, πŸ™‚

    thanks for voting nefycee! πŸ˜€

we didn’t decide yet… the idea is that, if the Lite version is usable well tuned, it will push the users to purchase a license. Therefore it would make sense not limiting the features of the Lite version, but limiting only the number of Tabbles.

There are more features planned for the Business version: archiving/backup and versioning above all.

    Hello mrdna,

don’t worry about the categories, in the next release there will be something very similar (but more powerful).

Plus we just thought about another amazing feature (which needs no longer than one day to be implemented) so we’ll squeeze that too into the next release (in a couple of days then). I’ll write something about it on our blog.

    Stay tuned! πŸ˜€
