HELLO WORLD,
for a long while people have been complaining about our icons being unsharp and “pixelated”… indeed they were, and the reason was we were using SHGetFileInfo (a Windows Shell API function) to obtain the file icon from the file path. This function can only cannot return the high definition icons we see in Windows Vista and Windows, such as the following:
So we started to investigate how to obtain the hi-res icons (called “jumbo” and “extralarge”) and found this article on how to get large icons using C++. The problem was to convert this code to C#. This is not easy, at least for me, because it requires, among other things, to write a wrapper for a COM interface, and I had no experience with this. Finally, with the help of this article, I made it. You can find the code below. (Remember that the interesting function is icon_of_path_large, whereas icon_of_path is the old function which can only return a low-res icon.)

Hi,
I get cut-off transparency (no alpha blending) – is there a fix I can apply to this, or is there something fundamentally incompatible?
Thank you very much! I was looking something like this for long time and nothing was working good as this.
I added @freundblade code (without it there was compilation errors) and works perfect!
Thanks 🙂
Your blog is fantastic and quite useful. Keep posting the visual basic related articles more..
I love .net. I started using from VB5.0 with windows 98 operating system. I like the way VS 6 designed. Though the recent VS 2010 is much useful with all bells and whistles, I still love visual studio 6.0.
Thank you so much for a great blog post.
With the .NET Framework 4.0 the call CloseHandle(hIcon) throws an SEHException.
I dont know if this is the ideal solution, but i replaced it with the following according to these links:
http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/netfxappcompatprerelease/thread/f9f7c039-9821-430e-b6a9-8c5ef9699442
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8690328/closehandle-gives-an-exception-external-component-has-thrown-an-exception
private const int WM_CLOSE = 0x0010;
[DllImport(“user32”)]
private static extern
IntPtr SendMessage(
IntPtr handle,
int Msg,
IntPtr wParam,
IntPtr lParam
);
SendMessage(hIcon, WM_CLOSE, IntPtr.Zero, IntPtr.Zero);
Thanks for this article! Just what I needed for my assignment 😛
It is kind of annoying how you don’t follow the official C# naming conventions though. “bitmap_source_of_icon”? Come on. You know it’s supposed to be “BitmapSourceOfIcon”. Even according to what Microsoft recommends.
Thanks very helpful. I was looking for that for ages indeed!
Thanks!
I had to add RECT and POINT and comment out SystemIcon() because of unknown ShellLib.
What is bool checkDisk for?
[StructLayout(LayoutKind.Sequential)]
public struct RECT
{
private int _Left;
private int _Top;
private int _Right;
private int _Bottom;
}
[StructLayout(LayoutKind.Sequential)]
public struct POINT
{
public int X;
public int Y;
public POINT(int x, int y)
{
this.X = x;
this.Y = y;
}
public static implicit operator System.Drawing.Point(POINT p)
{
return new System.Drawing.Point(p.X, p.Y);
}
public static implicit operator POINT(System.Drawing.Point p)
{
return new POINT(p.X, p.Y);
}
}
@freundblase
thank for your correcting, and you can find ShellLib here: http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/3551/C-does-Shell-Part
it’s basicshell library
@ Shane
Thanks for your corrections. I had discovered point 1, but not point 2.
This was very helpful for a project I’m currently working on. Thanks for posting it.
However, I would like to point out two minor issues:
1) CloseHandle is not meant to be used with icon handles
2) The size of the SHFILEINFO.szDisplayName should be MAX_PATH which is defined as 260 in the Windows header files.
Thanks for posting your code 🙂
Shane
