Great work!
Is a top 1 ok? 🙂1) outlook support so I can tag emails
the rest is of minor importance to me.
Mike
I’ve not yet had much chance to play with it, but my ideas are mostly work related-
1) Controlled Vocabulary – a database of tags based on some authority (ie LCSH, Getty, APT, Geonames etc). More important if sharing tags than if using it as a stand alone.
2) Extraction of Exif data from digital photos to create tags. May need an authority file to reduce the number of tags created this way.Possibly a few more after I’ve tried it a bit more 🙂
1. Allowing tabbles to be nested under other tabbles. This is a biggie.
2. An updated user manual – or maybe I just haven’t found it?
3. Working correctly with 2 monitors, not reverting to the primary monitor when Tabbles starts.
4. Adding the main menus, File, View, etc., was very good, IMHO, thank you very much. But it would be nice if the menus dropped when the mouse was hovered over the main item instead of requiring a click on each one.
5. Use the same text as all the other items in the Windows right click shell extension instead of a smaller, bold font
I admit some of these aren’t hugely important, but without the first, I’m reluctant to put too much effort into creating a structure I’m not happy with which limits my use of the program.
Cheers.1) Different forms possible for the tables. Not only round, but also some others like triangles, ovals etc
2) When you give a différent colour to the same name, the sort out by colour name creates as many headings as there are colours but groups the tables under one of the headings. So there are empty headings. Coud it be fixed so there is only one heading remaining, the one which is not empty. It is a attempt to have kind of "Theme folder" on the tabble panel under which you can have different colors for the same theme. This is useful when you have A LOT of different topic to treat like I do.Hello Veronique and welcome here! 😀
Thanks for your suggestions! I’m posting here the graphics that we got from the design who designed part of the Tabbles GUI.
On the top part you can see the tabble shapes that he designed for us: we have on our to-do list to implement them but it won’t be before at least a couple of months (the shared-tabbles have the highest priority…)
Enjoy:
Very nice, Andrea! Actually had that on my wish list too, but you guys been quite busy and a low priority for me as well.
Veronique, I’m not sure I quite understand what you’re saying there. Is that referring to a color that has no Tabbles attached still showing when you group by color name?
1) QUICK OPENING of tabbles without need to open main window
– throught search panel launched by hotkey (like "LAUNCHY" app)
– or throught autohiding side-bar2) SEARCH in file panel
It should be better if program Tabbles were filtering and reducing number of combinable tabbles on the right side of file panel according to text typed in search bar (in order to speed up searching for specific combinable tabble in case there’s a lot of tabbles linked to filtered files)3) DOUBLE CLICK on a window
I would like to use as many "mouse commands" as possible. For example double-click on background of main window or file panel isn’t used. Double click can be used to switch
– between "scroll" and "select" tool (in main window);
– among "normal" , "orbital" and "gallery" view in file panel.
There’s also possibility to use single "mouse wheel" or "CTRL + mouse wheel" for specific commands in file panel.4) MINIMIZED FILE PANELS on main window
Sometimes it’s a bit mess on my task bar (or object dock task bar) if there are a lot of opened file panels. It would be very nice if there was a possibility to minimize these panels somewhere on main window in form of list or "cloud" containing opened tabbles.5) Customizable "BASKETS" of Tabbles in main window in order to arrange them and sort them (like STARDOCK FENCES used on desktop)
+ one more) MOVING and COPYING of files to:
– folders in file panel
– or to folder-tabbles in main window
(throught drag&drop)hello there and welcome to the forum! 🙂

1)I’d really like to see the use of Metadata to help tag or suggest tagging. By having an option that will pull Metadata out of files and populate the tag list (or maybe a subset metatabble list 🙂 ) would really move this into the personal DMS space. So far so good though…
2) Put links to Tabbles and Tabbles Support in the Help menu
I reserve the right to make 3 more of these 😆
1) we know my friend, we know… this is also on the to-do list… but not so high though
2) well, there is something already… but good hint, I’m noting this down 😀
Looking forward for the next 3
– did you try the 1.4.10beta2?

1. Single click Tabbles (I normally use single click windows explorer)
2. Del key deletes things (rather then having to go to the Delete button in the menu)
3. Undo feature
4. Be able to apply subtraction automatically on certain extensions (i.e. temp files)
5. Create a more complete standard of tables for extensions.
(For example:
mp3, mod, mid, wav, wma, ogg, mp4a should all be assigned an AUDIO/MUSIC tabble,
avi, ogm, mkv, wmv, mp4, mov, etc should all be assigned to VIDEO tabble
Common Microsoft docs should all be assigned to DOCUMENT tabble)I know some users will want to create their own or alter the defaults but i find it frustrating to have to create these.
MANY MORE features desired as I will testing TABBLES pretty extensively to see if it would benefit non-power users.
Many of the users I support need all the help they can get just to find the file they saved recently.
I’ve spent hours with them showing them how to use folders but still they lose track of their precious files.Hello there!
Thanks for your message and welcome to the forum! 🙂
FYI, we’re giving the GUI a low priority now as we’re working on a client-server version of Tabbles allowing the users to share their tagging in intranet, like a real DMS (cool, isn’t it?) 🙂
Let me go through your post:"bwiersig" wrote:
1. Single click Tabbles (I normally use single click windows explorer)Uh… maybe an option to do that? This sounds an extremely power-user feature anyway… can’t you configure your mouse to do that automatically instead?

There is a (partial) workaround for this already: when you create an auto-tagging rule (which is the best way to use Tabbles) you can tell Tabbles "not to tag the file/folder" if the name contains a certain word". You could use this to exclude the folders that contain the name "temp". To create such rule go to Options > Auto-tagging rules > New."bwiersig" wrote:

Very interesting stuff here – listen up to this: the business version of Tabbles includes the functions Export database structure and Replace database structure (they are under File > Tabbles’ database). Those two functions do respectively export and import the skeleton of the db along with the rules, not including any of the data (the files, folders and urls). This means that you can create a set of rules for all the file types/names you want, then export it into an small xml file, pass it to to other people who can import it and have all those rules into their Tabbles database. More precisely the export db function does export the tabbles, the color groups and the rules.
Why did we do this?
– cause different people have different needs: imagine people editing videos or photographers, they’d need auto-tagging with file types and patterns that could only annoy a lawyer or a journalist.
– cause we had people like you in mind: we’re aware that creating complex rules is a time-consuming and it’s a power-user kind of feature, therefore we figured that an IT expert could it once and send it over to all of his customers/colleagues.
Smart, isn’t it? :ugeek:This feature is also enabled in the free version, so you could test-drive it and see what it can do for you with spending a penny on it.
(btw, if we’re talking about large numbers, we could even automate this process…meaning that your customers would automatically get a certain default database…)

I’ve spent hours with them showing them how to use folders but still they lose track of their precious files. We’d love to hear more about the people you support. This file-management issue is exactly the reason why we created Tabbles in the first place. I could also point you to a couple of happy reviews we got recently from real users (i.e. not people we paid or we pointed a gun to in order to write a review… 😀 ), respectively a photographer and a translator. It would also be interesting for us to know if the client-server feature could be interesting for your users… Please pm me and maybe we can talk via phone/skype?
Thanks,
Andrea
Welcome aboard! I think I see where you’re going here, and taking Andrea’s response in mind; I don’t know the makeup of the folks you support, but from years in computer repair and having elderly parents using Tabbles also, many of the ideas here would certainly be a benefit to the older set.
"bwiersig" wrote:
1. Single click Tabbles (I normally use single click windows explorer)I think Andrea’s correct here that an option is the answer. I also think it’s a damn good idea that better get on the to-do list. That said, the left-side tree is a single-clicker and may help in the interim.
"bwiersig" wrote:
4. Be able to apply subtraction automatically on certain extensions (i.e. temp files)The first time I read this I thought "Saved combines!". Like bookmarks. An over-reading of it, to be sure, but a nice idea that I hope is on the todo list. Andrea’s correct tho that the rules panel should be able to cover that for you.

I’ve spent hours with them showing them how to use folders but still they lose track of their precious files. You can build the rules yourself, but yes, one rule per filetype. A pain in the butt and I would be sure to miss one.
This brings up 2 things I can see; OR functionality in the rules panel (mp4 OR mov > Video tabble. Could have 1 rule instead of bunches, perhaps), and importing structures.
We could build a structure with a rule set that assigned extension to the generic tabbles and that would be a great thing to use to create a Tabbles database, but it doesn’t help if you want to apply it to an existing db… The weakness with the way structures are handled is that importing replaces the structure in toto and clears the database. (a bad thing if you didnt backup the db…) The ability to append the rules/structure into an existing db would be incredibly useful.
Before I go wandering off into the weeds. Nice ideas and I think this general idea should be pursued mightily.
Quickly wanted to outline something this brought to mind regarding structures and dbs. I seem to recall an old thread touching on this but it’s late… Anyways;
The ability to replace (how it currently works) or append structures and dbs. Basically you get the option to append/import rules, tabbles, and files in the case of dbs. Before anything is imported/appended/replaced a "Save db?" box pops. (box could be added now as there is no reminder warning you could be clearing your db…)
Hi mrdna!
yes, I remember the thread… not sure about the feasibility as it would require a db merge (which we’re already doing with the export/import functions…). You’re right about it anyway.
This brings up 2 things I can see; OR functionality in the rules panel (mp4 OR mov > Video tabble. Could have 1 rule instead of bunches, perhaps), and importing structures.
Well, this is *kinda* not true anymore: in the latest release we introduce the chance to use regular expressions in the rules (that was Maurizio’s idea… hats off to him!). While regular expression seem to be impossible to understand, the point is that we don’t really need to do complex stuff, therefore once we get 3 or 4 useful ones working, we can play around and change them to get more of them out. As they keep coming, we could put them in the wiki?
Some resources about regular expressions:
– Page on Codeplex
– Download Expresso, a regular expression editor
– The reference page on MSDN
– Regular expression library (warning: the syntax could be different… the one on the MSDN page is the one that should work)===> YES IT WORKS!!!
Well, I just got my first one working (with some help from Maurizio…hehe)! Here you go:
.*.avi$|.*.mov$|.*.mpg$
This one matches .avi OR .mov OR .mpg. A little explanation:
.* = matches any character
. = matches the character "." (the dot)
avi = matches the pattern "avi" (and also mov and mpg)
$ = end of the pattern to be matched (append this at the end of the thing you want to match)
| = plain and simple logical ORSo, if you want to add anothe extension, like .mp3, you append |.*.mpg$ to the previous expression.
Other interesting stuff:
b = matches backspace
^ = beginning of the line to be matched, the opposite of $
Well, the rest is in the msdn reference…I can see someone (mrdna) starting to toy around with this, isn’t it? 😀 :geek:
Hint: I got it to crash once already… since this is the first time we release this complex feature, of course it’s not bug-free!!! Therefore, make sure you backup your db when making experiments – you’ve been warned.
[EDIT]: our new friend Renicuente just posted he successfully used the regular expression:
.+.(?:doc|pdf|chm|ppt|xls|rtf|docx|xlsx)$
[EDIT 2]: check this out https://www.tabbles.net/wiki/index.php?title=Regular_expressions
(excellent!)
P.S.: soon there will be a page in the wiki and one on the main site on this topic… you’re all welcome to contribute!A.
I remember that threat… I even wonder if I was not originator…
I still believe that option to import DB structures or rules is great…
I understand that you now are able to import/export structures which are replacing the current structure…adding a structure is not possible..correct ?Would it be a great work ?
Other option describe on the wiki some regex rules for these regular resquests 🙂
BR,
JfMOST excellent, Andrea. Super-kudos to Maurizio! Will play with that. (Primary DB is getting huge and sprawling. Considering redoing the thing and starting by writing a full rule-set to automate most of the process. This will help ALOT!)
Don’t know how the append thing would be built in code, but I kind of envision it having 4 parts; 1 is adding tabbles to the current structure, 2 is adding the rules, 3 is adding the exclusions (probably not nescessary but…), and 4 adding the file entries. Adding the files would be adding them as tagged and not nescessarily attaching them to other tabbles as I’d imagine that would force a search process and I don’t know if that’s feasible.
best regards!
I love the concept, but the implementation is too limited for my purposes.
There is 1 make or break feature for me:
1.) Integration with windows explorer & other file explorers: Being forced to use the Tabbles interface means that I can not use my existing workflow & preferred file manager (Total Commander in my case). Integrating the program features closely into windows, will be beneficial for the widescale adoption of the application, since it would be more likely that a lot of people would start using the program (and buy it of course).
Hi UBIK, and welcome to the forum!
We know this already: the fact is that the development cost would be unbearable for us right now…Plus, using Total Commander, you can still use the auto-tagging feature of Tabbles (you tell Tabbles to listen to a folder and to auto-tag everything gets moved into it).
B.R.
Andrea
Hi there, I’m new to the forum and am nowhere near a power user, so please forgive me if I wind up requesting something that’s a) already been requested elsewhere, or b) already in the program and I just don’t know how to find it!
All of my requests have to do with making the user interface more friendly. I really like what Tabbles allows me to do in tagging and searching for files, but I will do as much as I can to do all of my file architecture work (creating and moving files and esp folders) in Explorer before opening the Tabbles program and adding tags last, because I find the Tabbles interface awkward to work in. A previous poster mentioned integrating more into Windows Explorer, but for me it would be enough just to let the interface work more and look more like Windows Explorer so that I can use the same techniques to move around. My top 5 are:
1. Create a KB shortcut and/or a toolbar button for “Create a new folder”.
2. Allow smaller icons/more compact lists of files/folders (similar in look to the List view in Windows Explorer). The current UI (in the compact view) seems to waste a lot of space and force a lot of unnecessary extra scrolling.
3. When viewing numerous files in one folder, allow the one view/page to scroll as much as needed for the number of files, rather than separating them into ‘pages’ (This is really irksome!)
4. Add simplified ‘back’ and ‘forward’ buttons that will go straight back and forth to the previous view rather than opening a menu of recent places to choose from
5. Add a customizable toolbar where one can place the functions the individual uses most.
As I said above, I am really liking Tabbles in other respects – I’m using it to build a mammoth database of scanned sheet music for church, and it’s awesome to be able to search for individual pieces based on their key, theme, scripture reference, hymnal source, arrangement etc. 🙂
