Zuerst versuchte ich natürlich die MSI bei dem entsprechenden Pfad zu finden. Aber damit hatte es nichts zu tun. Auch der Firefox war nicht schuld. Ohnehin installierte sich die neue Version. Lediglich brach die Installation selbst mit folgender Meldung ab:

Da ich danach aber dennoch die neueste Version hatte, störte es nicht groß. Allerdings nahm das ganze kritische Formen an als ich gezwungen war Tabbles zu deinstallieren um das neue Shared Tabbles zu testen. Eine erneute Installation war nicht mehr möglich! :-O
Ãœberreste in der Registry verhinderten eine erneute Installation. Weder der CCleaner noch ein manuelles durchforsten half. Irgendwo hatte sich ein Eintrag versteckt, und der war einfach nicht zu finden.

Eine Woche ohne Tabbles, eine gefühlte Ewigkeit verging.

Hoffnungslos verloren in einem Wust von Ordnern und Dateien.

Per Team Viewer versuchte dann heute Andrea sein Glück. Noch einmal wurde die Registry durchsucht, Installationsverzeichnisse gelöscht und Google mit Fragen bombardiert.

Eine Idee war es dann den Revo Uninstaller zu probieren. Leider brachte das auch nichts. Anfangs!

Der Unterschied des Revo Uninstallers liegt in einer Funktion. Die “Erzwungene Deinstallation”. Sie macht es möglich auch nicht installierte Programme zu “deinstallieren”.

Das allein war auch hier nicht die Lösung, denn eine Exe war ja nicht zu finden. Aber mit einem kleinen Kniff lies sich das Problem trotzdem lösen.

Ich habe die Tabbles Installation gestartet, und während diese lief, startete ich den Revo Uninstaller. Bevor nun die Installation abbricht ist es Revo möglich alle Registry Einträge zu finden die Tabbles anlegt.
Durch diesen kleinen Trick ist es möglich über den Revo Uninstaller alle diese Einträge löschen zu lassen, ohne das entsprechendes Programm installiert ist.

Und schon war das Problem gelöst. Ein weiteres Mal habe ich das Setup gestartet und Tabbles installierte sich vollständig ohne Fehlermeldung. Keine Spur von einer älteren Version die eine Installation verhindert.

Und es läuft wieder alles wie geschmiert. Eben begrüßten mich schon die ersten Popups der Auto-Kategorisierung…wie habe ich sie doch vermisst ^^

Yes, I hear you: “why you didn’t move to Installshield/nullsoft/installaware/you_name_it?”. The answer is that none of those does (apparently) support the .net client profile. Because of that we’re still stuck with the Visual Studio veeeeeery thing GUI to the the huuuuuuge Windows Installer technology.  And, while creating an installer with Visual Studio 2008 is relatively idiot proof (I can do it too!  ), it doesn’t seem to be versatile enough for us… and the underlying technology is huuuuge and not-particularly-well documented.

If you’re a developer and you feel you’re stuck to the VS2008 .msi project builder, then this may hopefully help you.

The problem: windows installer wasn’t (for sure) overwriting the file fsharp.core.dll cause the version number was the same, and (maybe) it wasn’t overwriting some other stuff too.  Our desperate cry can be read on our forum.

The solution: editing the the installer.msi with orca (you can download it from here), the full story solution is here. All you need to do is open Orca, open your .msi and create a pair REINSTALLMODE = amus in the Property table. What does amus mean? Honestly I don’t know and I couldn’t care less… all we care is that this amus thing is not in VS2008 anywhere and it kept us up at night for a looooooong time. Btw, we did a couple of tests and it seems to work butstill hold our fingers crossed
